NCC reports rise in intranets

Over 65 per cent of UK companies already have, or are developing, an intranet, according to a survey released yesterday by the National Computing Centre (NCC).

In its IT User Survey 1999, the NCC found that most firms initiated intranet projects to publish company-wide information, but once installed intranets are more likely to be used for workflow and groupware applications.

Although the number of companies implementing intranet projects is up by over 50 per cent from 1998, the survey also found that 54 per cent of respondents feel out-of-date information is causing a problem.

A third of businesses added that finding IT staff with the right technical skills to resolve the problem is proving difficult.

NCC questioned 4,500 IT directors in the UK in March this year for the survey.
