A recent (10/04) study by Eric Howes, an instructor at the University of Illinois, showed that Giant AntiSpyware caught 63% of spyware, to 47% and 33% for Ad-Aware and SpyBot respectively. Having used Ad-Aware, I can say that this will report tracking cookies that the Giant/Microsoft software does not treat as spyware.
Howes recommended using at least two types of software in conjunction. The two top performing brands (Giant and Webroot Spy Sweeper(48%)) caught 70% of Spyware when used together. The full report is available from WindowsSecrets.com.
