Senior execs keep away from the security issue because it’s an unpopular topic amongst staff and customers. They should realise that there is a role for them as heroes, when they insist upon as much attention to “usability” in security issues as in any other people-facing area.
Boards need to understand that it isn’t “security” that annoys employees and customers, but heavy-footed implementations by unimaginative and human-hostile security staff.
