IT departments often go out and buy technical solutions for problems, and then find out too late that the 'technically correct' solution takes no account of legislation or regulations that prevent its use. I can think of lots of email archiving solutions (particularly US-developed) that fall short of basic compliance and privacy legislation.

IT departments should be far better integrated into the organisation, and the IT Director role should be at Board level, particularly in heavily regulated industries.
