Don't get all excited now. Contactless payment card technology has been around for years, and is so cheap and advanced that in some places it replaces paper subway tickets.
It works a treat, the problem is the human side. For a high value generic payment card you need to select which card is getting the charge (most people carry more than one) and you still need to tap in your PIN.
No chance of stealing money from passers by then. But also not much benefit at the checkout.
