Symantec has unveiled a hybrid software product which is designed to protect companies against various simultaneous threats.

The product, called Symantec Client Security, features firewall, anti-virus and intrusion detection system (IDS) software rolled into one.

It features a single update mechanism which automatically updates virus definitions, firewall rules and intrusion detection signatures.

Gail Hamilton, executive vice president at Symantec, said so-called 'blended threats' are on the increase.

She said in a statement: "The security perimeter is rapidly disappearing, allowing today's malicious code to spread quickly via email, internet browsing and file sharing, often through inadequately protected clients."
