The US house of representatives has approved a cybercrime Bill that advocates life sentences for some computer hackers.

The Bill, passed by a 385-3 majority, also allows the police to tap into telephone or internet conversations without obtaining a court order.

Under the new proposals, a hacker found guilty of "recklessly" putting lives at risk through computer attacks will face life imprisonment.

The Bill will also extend an existing ban on advertising electronic surveillance equipment in newspapers and magazines to cover online ads.

The Bill, to be known as the Cyber Security Enhancement Act (CSEA), must now be approved by the Senate before it passes into law.
