Microsoft has admitted its instant messenger software contains a hole, in the same week as chairman Bill Gates resolved to clean up the company's act on security.
The security hole leaves email addresses, nicknames and contacts on the user's 'buddy list' open to snoopers.
Microsoft said it will issue a patch expected to be available by next week. Otherwise users can turn off a scripting feature to prevent disclosure.
