Lancashire police have given the green light to a tetra digital radio system from BT.
The go-ahead comes after a six-month trial period and clears the way for BT to implement a £2.9bn national roll out of the Airwave system.
The tetra technology used in Airwave features an encryption code to prevent criminals from eavesdropping on police conversations and promises improved radio coverage and voice quality.
Greater Manchester constabulary plans to implement the service by 2002 with BT aiming for national coverage by 2005.
