Computer Associates claims to have discovered a computer virus that searches and sends graphic files from one PC to another via email.
Published: 30 November 2000 15:51 GMT
Dubbed the Afeto virus, it works by searching for a .jpeg file on a user's machine and sending it to other computers embedded in a Microsoft Word document. The recipient receives an email that carries the words "para voces com afeto", Portuguese for "for
you with love".
Afeto shares some of the characteristics of recent high-profile viruses but unlike the Lovebug, for example, it searches users' 'sent items' folder rather than using the address book to forward emails. It also changes the name of the infected attachment and, most crucially, the subject header of the email.
