The US air traffic control system is at risk from hackers as federal regulators have persistently failed to address weaknesses in computer security.

A congressional report to be published today by the Government Accounting Office concludes that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not performed adequate background checks on engineers employed to perform security checks on systems, nor has it made sufficient progress in assessing the security risks posed to its operating systems.
Another source of concern was the employment of foreign workers hired to address millennium bug problems. The report claims the security checks on the workers were not stringent enough for the sensitive nature of the work they were conducting.
