Art Coviello, CEO of RSA Security, speaking at his company's SecurWorld conference in Malaga, Spain, shared his opinions on security in the wake of the Love Bug virus.

Coviello believes the extent of the software vendors' responsibility has been highlighted by the Love Bug attack. He told silicon: "The software in question should have been integrated with a security function which would have prevented the spread of the virus automatically."

But apart from vendors' liability, Coviello sees protection as a shared responsibility for all departments of a business. He said: "IT directors need to communicate with CEOs more and all members of the board should understand the need for strong security."

Coviello also recognises the importance of prevention and called for more direct legal action. He said: "Besides educating companies to understand the need for protection, legislators need to act proactively rather than slow down the technological issues. So far, in the US the government is yet to prove that it can punish cyber criminals based on up-to-date legislation."

RSA security is currently looking into development of biometrics and wireless data protection.
