The US government has taken its first steps towards a digital certification scheme designed to let citizens communicate with government departments securely over the Web.
The project - called Access Certificates for Electronic Services (Aces) - will provide a transactions service which is authenticated by a trusted third party (TTP). People will be able to use it to complete contract payments, taxes and passport registration.
The project is still being reviewed by government agencies and vendors, but could lead the way in the formation of a global public key infrastructure (PKI) - a framework for ecommerce.
