But does the software really matter?

of course it does, how could you even think that it might not

if Linux is chosen then an entire generation would grow up with the notion that good software can be free, that open source is nothing to be frightened of and that you don't need a supercomputer to browse the web or play solitaire because of the demands the OS makes on the hardware

the consequences to Microsoft's coffers could be horrific
