I actually got to Microsoft's London HQ and got to see the plans for longhorn and I have to say that I was quite impressed by the security features that were being planned for it, and how keen microsoft was keen to get involvement of major systems integrators early on.
Without breaking any NDAs, I have to say that the way that the OS archutecture was explained did make me wonder whether MS was going the right way. I think they should use longhorn as an opportunity to to what they are good at: embrace and extend. In this case they should consider embracing linux and also build longhorn on top of that.
the benefits would be for microsoft to extend their user base. For sure it will be hard work - but redmond has never been afraid of a fight before and just think of the revenue possibilities.
