Symbian continued to shift more phones bearing its OS in Q3, marking the fourth quarter the mobile OS maker has notched up more than 100 per cent growth.

Symbian's shipments in the third quarter of this year rose to 8.5 million, an 131 per cent year-on-year increase. Symbian now has an installed base of around 48 million phones, with 23 million Symbian OS phones shipped this year.

Symbian's finances are growing too. The OS firm announced third-quarter revenue of £28.6m, up from £16.3m in the corresponding period last year.

But, according to Symbian CEO Nigel Clifford, there's still a long way to go.

He said in a statement: "Symbian's quarterly figures demonstrate Symbian's leadership - and the rapid growth - of the global market for phones based on advanced operating systems. Nonetheless, shipments of Symbian OS phones remain small relative to the size of the overall handset market.

"Symbian's strategy continues to focus on driving adoption of Symbian OS as a development platform both for advanced mobile devices and for lower price, high volume handsets."
