LG Electronics, a top five supplier of mobile phones, has said it will use an operating system from SavaJe Technologies in some models from next year.

The SavaJe OS is completely Java-based and while it often fails to get a mention next to more famous smart phone OSes such as those from Microsoft, PalmSource, Symbian and potentially even open source Linux it has been quietly making inroads.

Key building block suppliers Intel and Texas Instruments have seen the OS optimised for their chip architectures, while T-Mobile earlier this year joined Orange and Vodafone as well as some VCs as backers of the Massachusetts-based software company.

LG Electronics said SavaJe will be used in 2.5 and 3G handsets. LG has made inroads around the world, using its advanced domestic market as a springboard, and just yesterday was in Orange's opening line up of 3G phones.

More details on how LGE will work with SavaJe are expected at the 3GSM trade show next February.
