Fancy being Linus Torvald's deputy?
Published: 30 January 2002 12:00 GMT
The tight-knit group of developers that control the progress of the Linux operating system is looking for a new recruit to manage updates to the code.
In a letter to the Linux kernel mailing list, developer Rob Landley called for the post of Penguin Patch Lieutenant to be created to look after the masses of patches being added to the code.
Landley said Linus Torvalds - the creator of the operating system - currently drops code because he doesn't have the time to integrate it. Without someone looking after this admin, the development of the operating system could be damaged, or different versions could appear.
Linux was written by Torvalds when he was a computer science student at Helsinki University in 1991, and it has been developed and maintained largely by himself and other volunteers ever since.
