The interest in high-tech ID cards and passport schemes in the wake of the 11 September terrorist attacks has sparked interest in the services of De La Rue - better known as a banknote printer.

De La Rue has already secured contracts to develop passport and ID card systems for Chile and Malta and is sniffing around the proposed scheme to launch ID smartcards in the UK.

The company has reported pre-tax profits up from £27.7m to £41.5m for the six months to 29 September.

The company has also benefited from the launch of the euro. Printing the new banknotes will account for eight per cent of the company's cash systems division sales this year.
