Sun Microsystems has announced that it will publish the source code for its Forte for Java, Community Edition development tool.
The company hopes the move will appeal to the open source community and draw developers to Java. The code is scheduled for release by May under Netscape's Mozilla public liscensing model.
Even Eric Raymond - long critical of Sun's "community licensing" for Java - has come forward to support the company's move towards an approved open source model. The move also drew praise from the Apache Software Foundation.
Forte allows for integrated editing, compilation, debugging, and visual design for development on Linux, Solaris and Windows.
