This article illustrates a basic problem as a side issue. - The difficulty of checking whether or not a particular patch has been applied. The MSO number on its own is not helpful in the context of an article like this. It would be far more helpful to have used the KB number of the specific patch.
We all have to assume that Update has put it on, but Windows Update doesn't provide a particularly searchable mechanism for identifiying specifics or even of indexing the reference numbers.
Having spent 5 hours last week applying all XP patches on a laptop that had never been on the internet or a network it is clear that the whole process needs to be improved to help people keep things up to date.
