Surely they wouldn’t make it so obvious as dropping the connection and re-dialing a different number?
In the first instance all they have to do is change the number in your default dialup account. It would be the next time you go to connect as you normally do that you would be paying a premium rate, and every time after that until you realise what has happened. Then you would have to be fairly observant to notice a change in the DTMF dial tone pattern, and most people probably don’t check the phone number in the dialup dialog box every time before they click connect, or possibly have it set to automatically connect without showing the dialup dialog.
