It is great to see that green policies are on the rise, and that the IT industry is leading the way; it’s a welcome change from a couple of years ago. That said, it is no surprise that the main driver is the electricity bill rather than CSR. Cost-cutting aside though, most companies don’t seem to be aware of the regulation that is due to hit, forcing us all to introduce more sustainable operations.

Take the UK government’s upcoming Carbon Reduction Commitment. The scheme will require companies in non-energy intensive sectors to buy carbon credits if they go over the set energy limit. Initially, this will apply to any company on half-hour metering that uses more than 6,000MWh of electricity per annum, and is likely to include any company that spends more than £1,000,000 a year on electricity. For some companies, this could be crippling.

The pressure is building for all companies to go green, but if everyone does something, even if it is something small, it will make a huge difference to the environment.
