Compaq and Dell are to bundle pre-configured Oracle software with their hardware to allow users to link computer networks.

Speaking yesterday at Oracle's application OpenWorld conference in San Francisco, Michael Capellas announced the Compaq Database Utility - a tool which allows users to make changes to clustered Oracle databases without taking the database offline.

The new tool will be available from January for Compaq's AlphaServer systems.

Compaq and Dell also said they will begin selling pre-configured Oracle software with their servers.

Compaq will offer pre-tested versions of Oracle software - compatible with the Windows 2000 operating system - to run on Proliant servers.

Dell will offer oracle software compatible with both Windows and Linux to run on its PowerEdge 6400 and 6450 servers.
