IBM's distributed computing initiative has taken another step forward with the creation of a computing grid between the University of Pennsylvania and four hospitals to develop advanced methods of breast cancer diagnosis.
The University of Pennsylvania Grid is an open-source distributed computer network that delivers resources and processing power as a utility-like service over the internet.
The grid allows hospitals to store mammograms in digital form, provide powerful analytical tools to help doctors identify individual cases and identify cancer "clusters" in the population.
Data will be stored in an IBM DB2 database.
