Nortel Networks and IBM are jointly developing data and voice networks to allow voice messages to be sent over the internet.
The deal will see IBM incorporate its WebSphere ebusiness infrastructure software and DB2 database into Nortel's Symposium Contact Center solution.
The deal extends the voice-over internet protocol (VoIP) partnership between the two companies.
In a recent report, Frost & Sullivan predicted that VoIP networks will account for 75 per cent of world voice services by 2007.
