The Institution of Chemical Engineers (ICE) has said rejected Microsoft operating system Windows NT for Unix in its administration upgrade.
The ICE claims NT is not reliable enough for its enterprise needs and has selected Unix specialist SCO for the contract worth £200,000.
SCO's OpenServer Enterprise product, combined with software from development house Systems Team Bristol, will manage a database of around 80,000 membership records for the Institution.
Graeme Gardner, IT manager for ICE, said the company also chose SCO because of its low administration costs, its scalability and ease-of use.
NT is not satisfactory because it had to be constantly rebooted, according to Gardner.
