European Internet messaging market to top £2.2bn in 2005

Analyst house, Frost & Sullivan, is predicting a meteoric rise for Internet messaging software in Europe, with revenues growing from $389.5m last year to $2.2bn in 2005.

A market survey from the company said that messaging technologies like groupware and unified messaging are piggybacking on the increased popularity of the Internet, intranets and extranets.

Noting that most major corporates have their email systems in place and now add to them only incrementally, Frost & Sullivan said vendors will need to find new technologies to offer end-users. Technologies like IP telephony software, IP fax software and desktop videoconferencing software are growing in importance.

According to the survey, Microsoft's Exchange has knocked Lotus Notes off the email bestseller spot in the last 12 months; but Lotus continues to be the most popular choice for large corporates.
