A US military report has predicted that widespread disruption will affect the power and water supplies of major US cities because of the millennium bug.
The study, carried out by Naval and Marine Corps-based commanders, said it was "probable" and "likely" that partial failures would occur in electric utilities that serve 60 of about 400 military facilities.
Partial water system failures were predicted in 65 cities, including Dallas and Houston.
Natural gas supplies were also rated as likely to suffer disruption in Fort Worth and Nashville.
But the report has been dismissed by the White House as "overly pessimistic". John Koskinen, the top US Y2K advisor, claimed the Clinton administration's own recent report said it was highly unlikely that national electricity and water supplies would fail.
